MCM London Comic Con 2014

I went to London yesterday for a day of family geekery at the MCM London Comic Con. It was wonderful and exhausting. Here are some highlights.

London Film and Comic Con - summertime and the geeking is (not exactly) easy

July means two things to a geek like me: 1) London, 2) San Diego. It's Comic Con time!

London Film and Comic Con (LFCC) is a huge Showmasters event that brings TV/film actors to their fans. It's always busy, always sweaty and always amazing in spite of this.

My final countdown to SXSW 2014

I'm off to Texas this week for SXSW, the annual awesome meetup for all things film, music and digital. The schedule already seems too much for my fragile emotions to handle, but here are some things I'm looking forward to.

Benedict Cumberbatch meets, greets and charms Sherlock fans at Starfury convention

I was one of 800+ people who met, gazed at, talked to and generally swooned over Benedict Cumberbatch at the Starfury Sherlock convention last weekend.

I may never recover.

5 things I won't do when I meet Benedict Cumberbatch

I'm off to Starfury's Elementary convention this weekend, which means I'll be meeting Benedict Cumberbatch on Sunday.

It's important to prepare oneself for these events, so here are five things I won't do, or I'll try very hard not to do, when I meet him.

Re-watching Sherlock - series one

I decided to re-watch all of Sherlock this week before the finale to series three on Sunday punches me in the heart. Here are some of the things I was thinking as I watched series one this week.

Three things to help you emotionally prepare for the Sherlock series three finale

It is a truth universally acknowledged in fandom, that a series/season finale will kick you in the feels. With this in mind, here are three things you can do to emotionally prepare yourself for whatever terrible things happen in the Sherlock series three finale "His Last Vow".

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (2013)

Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark endure the road trip from hell as winners of the 74th Hunger Games, attempting to convince President Snow and the whole of Panem that their romance is real. People in the Districts start to rebel against the Capitol and adopt the Mockingjay, and Katniss, as their symbol of hope. And if that wasn't enough to deal with, victors of previous Hunger Games are once again thrown into the arena for the Quarter Quell. Tick tock...

The must-have accessory for any Hunger Games fan

Cosplay videos from Sneaky Zebra are fandomtastic

I've recently discovered the talents of Sneaky Zebra, a filmmaking team who edit together fantastic cosplay videos from geek conventions.

They were running around with a Flycam 5000 at London Film and Comic Con last month and have also been at San Diego Comic Con.

Comic Con 2013 - some of the best bits

That's it for another San Diego Comic Con! I wasn't there in body but I was there in spirit. Here are the things reported by my fellow fangirls and fanboys that make me happy.

London Film and Comic Con 2013

My niece, sis and me. Don't mess with us and our boys.

I joined thousands of geeks in London at the weekend for London Film and Comic Con (LFCC to the veterans like me). As usual, it was full of long queues, geeky merchandise, guest talks and cosplay. I spent most of my day standing in line for and sitting in talks about Game of Thrones and The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones. Here are some thoughts on my day in geeksville.

Countdown to London Film and Comic Con 2013

Last July I went to London Film and Comic Con and had a lovely time meeting Gillian Anderson, Mitch Pileggi and sniggering at the Game of Thrones fan cosplaying as a man of the Night's Watch who was steering a pushchair.

PAX East 2013 - where this geek had never gone before

OMG I'm at a gaming con!
I recently joined tens of thousands of gamers in Boston for PAX East, the convention for gamers run by Penny Arcade.

But I don’t game, so what the hell was I doing there?

The Fringe finale - time travel, tears and a white tulip

Sky1 made the brilliant decision to simulcast the last two episodes of Fringe with Fox in America, uniting fans around the world in one final two hour adventure. I intended to be watching at 1am on Saturday, but the snowpocalypse prevented me from getting to my sister's house and her Sky subscription.

I avoided the interwebs, made it through the snow and sat down for the last two episodes Liberty/An Enemy of Fate on Sunday afternoon.

Discovering fanfiction through The X-Files

Back in my Livejournal days I read a lot of fanfiction.

Are you still with me?

Not only did I discover some amazing fan writers but I also read a lot of stories that were so badly written that they were utterly hilarious.

The bad fanfiction I found was written by people who a) couldn't spellcheck, b) embraced every romantic cliché known to mankind, c) liked to write a lot, and d) took it all very very seriously.

Preparing for China with a little help from Firefly

I'm off to China in a few weeks for work and I'm starting to panic about my lack of language skills. Give me a dead language like Latin and Greek and I'm all over it, but ask me to learn a language you actually need to speak and I'm screwed.

So I'm placing my trust in Firefly to help me prepare for my trip.

5 things a geek like me wants for Christmas

I read on Twitter today that we have nine Wednesdays until Christmas. When I got over the shock I had a root around Pinterest for some geeky things I can put on my wish list for Santa. I have to admit, most of them are pretty unlikely to arrive down my chimney.
