SXSW 14: a chat with the cast of Brooklyn Nine-Nine

I didn't expect to meet some of the Brooklyn Nine-Nine cast at SXSW, but the Roku Lounge hosted a day of Fox TV chats that included Melissa Fumero (Detective Amy Santiago) and Stephanie Beatriz (Detective Rosa Diaz).

A small but appreciative audience sat in the Roku Lounge with Fumero and Beatriz, here are some highlights.

Melissa Fumero shared her favourite dialogue from the show 

Andre Braugher (Captain Holt) sings a lot on set 

Andre Braugher is best known for his serious roles in the likes of Homicide: Life on the Street and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, and the cast of Brooklyn Nine-Nine are generally in awe of him on a daily basis. So imagine him bursting into song randomly on set. A lot.

They all have way too much fun 

In a show that includes Andy Samberg you expect the actors to tell stories of dissolving into giggles on set, but you might not expect them to say that the crew are often just as likely to lose it. Imagine being the camera operator up close to Andy Samberg and you can understand why you might need to leave the room to stop laughing. And in case you were wondering, Andy Samberg and Fred Armisen learnt the lyrics and an entire dance routine for a scene in 'Operation: Broken Feather'. Santiago and Diaz need more screen time together 

Fumero and Beatriz were hilarious to watch together as you can tell they're good friends off-set as well as on it. Their characters don't get a lot of interaction in the show, but they really should. They enjoyed their time together filming in a car during the 'Sal's Pizza' episode so much that they create a theme song, which they sang for us and everyone walking by the lounge.

They get starstruck

I think it's often easy to forget that actors on TV shows can get seriously starstruck by other actors they run into at awards events or on their own sets. For these ladies it tends to lead to "creepy staring and silence", which includes the time that Fumero spotted Amy Adams at the Golden Globes and couldn't stop staring at her even when they made eye contact. Amy Adams looked away. Awkward!

They would not give up any spoilers about the season finale

We tried, but the ladies weren't giving anything away. All we got was Fumero yelling "It's soooooo good you guys!" and Beatriz explaining her "WTF?" reaction when she read the script.
